Learn more about the MMNA with these FAQs.

The Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance (MMNA) is the amount of monthly income to which a community spouse is entitled. If the community spouse's income is less than their MMNA, they are entitled to an income shift from the institutionalized spouse.

Some states impose a standard MMNA, where the community spouse is entitled to a standard amount. Other states have a minimum and maximum MMNA, where the community spouse's monthly allowance varies depending on their shelter expenses, not to fall below the minimum or exceed the maximum.

States that use a standard MMNA include Alabama, Alaska, California, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Wyoming.

States that use a minimum and maximum MMNA include Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
