I’m interested in expanding my strategic referral partnership for my elder law practice. What types of businesses have you found to be the most beneficial partners?

This is a great question! In working with attorneys to help them build their referral network in crisis Medicaid planning I have been surprised by some of their best referral sources. I would think of yourself as an attorney who can take a referral from any professional working with seniors which deepens the pool. In some communities, there are professional groups that are focused on senior services and can include senior care placement consultants, in-home care professionals, and financial advisors that specifically focus on retirement strategies. I have met real estate agents that specifically work with seniors looking to sell homes as they transition to independent or assisted living. Long-term care insurance brokers can be excellent referral sources as they will have clients that fail the underwriting requirements and will need assistance with planning sooner rather than later. Local community senior centers are always looking for attorneys to present information from basic estate planning through complex Medicaid issues. If you can focus your legal work on Medicaid planning then estate planning attorneys are no longer your competition but excellent sources of referral work as well. Also, getting involved with local non-profit support groups like the local Alzheimer’s Association can be personally and professionally rewarding.

As a Medicaid Planner I’ve had great success with establishing relationships with elder law attorneys. Many senior agencies refer clients to us that do not initially want to work with attorneys. During consultation I explain why they will benefit from hiring an attorney and provide that referral.

I get referrals from neurologists, geriatric physicians, and other medical providers. Also members of Parkinson’s and Dementia support groups. And members of the Long Term Care Social Workers.

The best partnerships for me have been Medicaid consultants who are able to assist with Medicaid application submissions and minor spend down (but not legal advice or more advanced Medicaid planning), financial advisors, realtors, and social workers.
